Good morning from 'BE' UK Stein. I find the word 'disappeared' generating my interest and curiosity. Does your source of information give no further info? Weather? Human error?

No, unless a wreck turns up it is hard to say why a ship disappears, and if one does turn up, then I guess she is no longer among those who disappeared(?). But of course there are always speculations. All five-masters ended badly, and so did more four-masted ships than could be expected, and therefore many suggested they were too big to handle.

The straits have of course always been a prime hunting ground for pirates, but a five-masted auxiliary barque with a big steam engine, a cargo of rice, and a crew of 38 does not seem a likely prey to some junk with a handful of lightly armed bandits.
