This, I believe we called the tunnel in Norwegian... or was the ''tunnel'' the escape possibility from the engine room leading up to the poop? The French caption to the picture is anyway ''La traversee.'' It is from a 1876 issue of the illustrated magazine L'Illustration.

Maybe the chief and the second one talk about the excessive oil consumption of the bearings from the drive shaft in the shaft tunnel

Maybe that, or the cost of keeping a smart sailor-like look with the excorbitant price moustache wax had then reached. "Shaft tunnel" sounds good.

Stein, it is "shaft tunnel" in English. Shortened in the ER to tunnel.
