I sailed as Mate in the Wheelsman in 1969 and 1970 with Capts.Jan Rog an Tommy Williams, she was a comfortable ship, and very hard worked.

I joined her at Clelands during fitting out as a 16 year old, only Captain Crowhurst myself and Chief Engineer standing by.
First trip to Tees, Felixstowe, Cardiff and Pembroke, can remember all new mattresses failing into bottom of drydock when lifting onboard and massive blisters on hands due to valves being VERY stiff. happy days!!!.
Best wishes,
Steve.

An ignominious end for a fine ship

I went on board Wheelsman a couple of times with my Dad at Shoreham, probably late 1960s or very early 1970s. Although Dad had left Rowbotham in 1959 as Master of Quarterman, he couldn't resist going aboard any Rowbotham ship that was in port while we were there! Jan Rog is a name that cropped up regularly in conversations about his old firm.

I have since heard that Captain Crowhurst was one of the companies top dogs and for some reason stood by the Wheelsman from when the keel was laid, he was a real stickler for running things by the book, always had to be called Captain or Sir and would chase me from the bridge if he caught me up there without a reason, he was a real gentleman and always took pride in his appearance, I cannot remember seeing him out of uniform or without his hat on, as a 16 year old newby he did terrify me but in a good way, he taught me how to respect things.
Best wishes,
Steve.
PS, When she left Clelands she had a derrick on the foremast pointing forward, later removed for some reason.
