The Waipawa had a couple of 10 cylinder B&W 4 strokes. You could stand between units 5 & 6 and watch movement in the cylinders when it came to the firing stroke. The bottom of the liner was open and you could see the bottom of the piston as it went thru BDC. Hence any wear in the liner or rings allowed exhaust gases to escape into the ER. There was a permenant cloud of smog hanging over the engines. But after 36 years i suppose that would have been expected.

HI Raybnz this was a 9 cyl. job ms "Hasselo" Rederi Rex Sweden an ore carrier with oiltanks on port and starboard wings very slow rev's like a great big sewing machine
