Fyffes Line BAYANO at Galveston, Texas on maidan voyage June 1972.
Bayano and Barranca were built at Vigo, Spain by Barreras for a new weekly containerised banana service loading at Puerto Cortes and discharging alternate weeks at either Gulfport, Mississippi or Galveston, Texas. Each ship had a capacity for 93 - 40 feet refrigerated containers. The ships were self loading/unloading by means of 29 ton container crane. Loading at Cortes direct from rail cars, discharge at Gulfport or Galveston direct on to road trailers.
Ships were 4087 grt. Twin screw motor ships powered by two 12 cylinder Deutz 4 stroke medium speed diesel engines each driving afixed pitch propeller through reduction gearing. A total power of 6400 bhp gave a speed of 16 knots.
While successful in this operation the ships did not last long. - laid up in 1984 at Cortes they were broken up at Brownsville, Texas in 1985.
Interesting ships to sail on but very basic compared to other of the company's ships.
Ships had Fyffes officers and Honduran ratings.
Engine room watch was one engineer and one greaser/cleaner.
