Built by Wm Denny, Dumbarton for "Paddy" Henderson's UK - Burma trade
Prome and sister Salween had a fair amount of passenger accommodation.
Picture taken at Princes Dock, Glasgow. Unfortunately the passage of time means I have no details of the ship

O.N. 164119
Completed May 1937. 1940 Requisitioned and converted for service as a mine depot ship.
1952, 30th January Acquired by Elder Dempster with the purchase of Paddy Hendersons. Never traded on E.D's West Africa service.
1955, October. In collision with CYCLOPS in Liverpool Bay, minor damage.
1962, 30th September. Arrived Bruges for demolition by Van Heghen Freres.
Sister ship SALWEEN

Further pic posted on Cargo Vessels gallery.

Heard a story from the 2nd Eng when she was scrapped. He sold the 6" copper condensate pipe for beer money and then told they had to shift ship the next day!
Knowing the individual concerned, I quite believe it.

Good Story - the only 2nd Engineer that I knew ( well he lived in same Glasgow housing scheme) was a guy called Mc Cutcheon. I remember him getting quite annoyed with a shore repair gang on Martaban. They were washing their hands using soft soap in the hotwell tank for the Cochrane auxiliary boiler.
As G & J Weir men and boys we would not have stooped to such practices

That was the guy!!
Known throughout Elder Dempsters as "Johnny the Fox", also as "Have Glass, Will Travel". His tale about the condensate pipe was hilarious, with them all jumping about the engine room in puddles of boiling water.
Sadly, Johnny crossed the bar quite a few years ago, another memorable character gone.

What a coincidence !
I cannot remember too much about him apart from his remonstrating with shore gang on Martaban. He did seem a little older than the usual 2nd Engineer at that time - but maybe that could be explained by his lifestyle.
Sorry to hear of his passing.

Johnny retired as 2nd Engineer, his brother, whose Christian name escapes me, was a Chief Enginer. They both came over to Elder Dempsters from Paddy Hendersons.
Another of his stories was when he borrowed his brother's car (without his knowledge) to go to a ship in drydock and the crane dropped a breast shore on top of it.
He relieved me a few times when I was 2nd Eng with Elders and the African engine room headman would say to me, "Boss, Mr. Fox is on the quay. Will I lock everything up.?"
