This is a photograph of a group of Officers and crew of HMS Argonaut taken at Kegon Falls, Nikko Park in Japan, February 1946. My Father (Frederick Sweetingham)is on the far right (indicated by arrow). He was an Able Seaman.
I have limited information about Argonaut's duties at that time other than she was servining in the Pacific helping with the evacuation of Brtish prisoners of war.
Would love to hear from anybody who knows more.

I think it should be the Kegon Falls in Nikko National Park.
Found these sites for the ship history although you may have seen them :-

http://www.naval-history.net/xGM-Chr...L-Argonaut.htm

http://www.hmsargonaut.co.uk/dido-cl...-1942-1946.php

It still doesn't give much detail of the era you are looking at.

Thanks for that Dave ... have changed the description to suit. Had a bit of a google and confirmed. Interestingly enough, I have three more similar photos, one of which is the same group of guys on the steps of a building that up until your post I have never been able to identify. Google shows me that it is the entrance gate to the shrine and mausoleum of Tokugawa Leyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, also at Nikko. It appears that Nikko has been a centre of shinto and buddhist mountain worship for centuries, and the Park is a popular tourist attraction now, as it obviously was years ago. The modern day pictures I found look no different to those of 1946. Delighted to have found all this out so thank you very much again.

Thanks for the Argonaut links as well.

Clive
