RFA Orangeleaf in West Float Birkenhead after several weeks in Cammell Laird's No 5 drydock, 16/12/09.
She still has plenty of staging erected so I imagine there is still some work to be done before the refit is finished.

If she is ex-Balder London, I saw her come back to Devonport in 82 from the Falkands, have a photo of her somewhere, approaching Yonderberry. I must dig it out.
Anybody know what the purpose of the structure is midships, with the 'cabin' on top?

As far as remember from my days in Bayleaf the structure is the combined RAS control room (RASCO) and winch cabs. The little tardis like thing on top is something else and does not seem to appear in pictures of Bayleaf. Seems to have windows or openings facing forward only so perhaps an emergency conning position or lookout, or something defensive ?

I think it's for the Gunnery Director Rex.

Oakleaf had a similar "tardis". Seems too remote from the bridge/guns/comms to be for the DWO/PDO or whatever he is called these days.

I'm sure it was used for the forward GPMG director in "Orangeleaf" My last ship prior to retirement in 2002. There is a story to it, We were alongside "Yonderberry" when We did an Action Stations Muster prior to BOST and the PO who was supposed to be there was missing for about two hours finally being found in His cabin bathroom, no longer with us if You see what I mean. A very sad occaision for the whole Ships company and for me being My last appointment, a retirement party was held for me about a week later, that particular BOST was scrubbed until a later date.

I think you are referring to "Frank's Folly" named after the gentleman who dreamt it up during the conversion from Balder London (I was there too). It is indeed for the fwd LGD but in practice had all the shortcomings alluded to in this thread. In recent Gulf work, of course it was a delight with the sun out!!
Greetings to all for 2010.
