An amazing picture of her; this is maybe in February 1961 (on the basis that once on the Middleton Reef she never got off, and she seems to have just 'landed') - thank you for sharing it

Great excitement from Mrs Tonga... she (and indeed I) only saw her in 1975, by which time she was not exactly in good condition.....
A salutary reminder that running aground at 17 knots on to a coral reef is not in the Owner’s Manual or how to look after your precious ship.

Swishing the rudder around did not get her off from what I read.

She was just very unlucky that a storm blew up just before they were ready to tow her off whilst she was still partially afloat. The storm blew her further onto the reef making any rescue impossible. Lots of links on this site regarding the Runic. Believe the Master later became a Harbour Master in NZ?

Not as embarassing as running a fairly new Pilot Boat aground and writing it off, which is what happened on the Tees some time back or the brand spanking new Magdalena (Royal Mail) on her maiden voyage in 1949
