From the Yard of Swan, Hunter, Wigham and Richardson for the Palm Line, 6,157 GRT motorship



G and J Weir of Glasgow were Manufacturers of some of the on-board auxiliary plant and systems. The photo was rescued from old Company archives that were being disposed of some 20 years ago. (Identity of the original photographer unknown)

I think you have saved for posterity some wonderful ship images of a period of British maritime history that we will never see again. This particular vessel, sister to Lagos Palm, captures the end of the evolution of the general cargo vessel before the advent of box boats. 5 hatches, tween decks, derricks, hatch boards, single screw with no bow thrust, total crew of 48 . A great time to be at sea.

Thanks for comments, Barry, you have summarised it well - these WERE ships, couldn't wait to get away to sea having worked on them for over five years (1958 - 1964) whilst serving an apprenticeship. Sadly no more. But good to remember how it was, eh?

This photo is in the book 'Palm Line' by Laurence Dunn and P.M.Heaton.
With about 30 people on the foc'sle head she is probably on trials off the North East coast.

Thanks Dan, how could I forget. Tennants if the ship was running from the UK, or Heineken or Orangeboom if from the Continent. Both most welcome down the coast!
