In about 1977, if memory serves, we used to service the 50ft Survey vessel belonging to Liverpool Polytechnic (2xThorneycroft 6 cyls!). At that time, work was underway to demolish the last parts of the Princes Pier, which consisted of the emigration hall and high level accesses to the Transatlantics. Knowing the watchman, we were able to inspect it all before it got the deep six. Its a shame that one didn't think to photograph it! You could almost hear the clamour of voices and bustle of people in the empty hall. Its no wonder small children think that the world used to be in B&W!
