Great ship. I sailed on her as R/O, single handed. The Radio Room was behind the chart room and when I came off watch in the evening, the Master, Paddy Redden, used to brew the tea for the 3/O and me whilst the secunny had a smoko and I did a trick on the wheel - very civilised.

Spent Christmas day '64 in Vizagapatnam and after lunch decided to visit the Russian ship on the other side of the quay to dispense some Christmas spirit. We were met at the top of the gangway by a very unfriendly type waving a machine gun and making go away signals - so we did.

I did get caught out in a blow in the Med on the way home. Copying traffic, pecking away one-fingered on the typewriter and stuffing food down my neck with a fork in the other hand when she took a big roll to starboard. I toppled backwards still inside the chair and ended up on the floor with the typewriter and remainder of dinner lying on top of me. I seem to remember a comment like "well, blow me down, there's a thing!"

I got caught again later on in the channel in freezing cold weather. The auto-alarm went off in the middle of the night so, like a good R/O, grabbed a towel to preserve my modesty, stuck my feet in flip-flops and headed for the radio room PDQ - three sets of outside ladders later I got to the radio room, frozen! One of the mates took pity on me and lent me his deck coat while I thawed out on top of the radio room heater.

One of my best voyages, a happy ship and everybody mucked in, whatever needed to be done. Priceless.
