The German river steam tug Braunkohle I (i.e. Brown Coal) from the Reederei Braunkohle GmbH, Cologne passing under the Hohenzollern Bridge, next to the Cathedral of Cologne.

There are only a few informations about this vessel. The vessel was built in 1923 as the Dutch Oranje I for Brandstoffenhandel en Reederij, Amsterdam and sold in 1935 to Germany. It is photographed here in the second half of the 1930's and in 1950 his 400 H.P.-propulsion was changed from heating oil to coal gas, driven by gasified lignite. This innovation allowed it to avoid importing expensive heating oil, especially in the post-war years in Germany.

The tug must have been broken up sometime before 1960. Maybe anyone had some more details about Braunkohle I.

The 400 hp screwtug BRAUNKOHLE I was built in 1923 as Dutch ORANJE I for N.V. Brandstoffenhandel en Reederij, Amsterdam. She was sold in 1935 to the German company and renamed. But the picture I know of her shows a quite different ship.
Might be your picture is showing an earlier ship named BRAUNKOHLE I??

It could be possible that the picture is showing the preceding Braunkohle I and the picture was taken some years earlier. The postcard I've scanned it from was stamped in 1941.
