I remember as a passenger a visit to the 'great hall of machinery' on "Accra" which had similar 4 cyl examples of these. Our guide was shouting at the top of his voice for ages and waving his arms describing the engine and its operation. Couldn't hear anything above the roar and clatter. We just grinned and nodded politely still none the wiser. Ringing in the ears for an hour afterwards. The rising and plunging of the connecting rods was impressive though!

Doxford 60LB3 engine. more than 120 of these were built at Sunderland. 60CM cylinder bore; L is for Long; B is for Balanced, Later the LBD was used where D was for Diaphragm (between lower piston and sump)
