Here she is again in the Gareloch on 21 August 1980 - so she was not lost as suggested earlier. Note the pipework to permit salvage, the marker poles fore and aft and the divers helmet painted on the conning tower. So what happened next ?

This is interesting and blows away any data I had on the Grampus's fate!!
The Grampus was paid off 4th Dec 1978 after use as a static trainer at Dolphin in Gosport but was removed on 29th Feb 1980 and taken in hand at Portsmouth Dockyard for conversion to an ASW target. (British Warships Since 1945 Pt2)
World Ship Society in late 1980 documented the sub as lost between March/May 1980 whilst in use as a target. So.... is the WSS date inaccurate or was the sub salvaged after her premature sinking? Ultimately the Grampus dissapears at some time in 1980.

Hmmm! Not convnced of a date in 1985 as Grampus all but dissapeared in 1980, there is no listing of her laid up in Janes or British Warships and Auxiliaries between 1981-85. I have a crossed out date of Nov 1980 alongside Grampus in my records so could be an option.
I have emailed the RN Sub museum enquiries to see if they can confirm Grampus ultimate fate.

Narwhal is not an issue she defo went in Aug 1983, I have images of her at Falmouth being prepped for final disposal.
Porpoise was defo 1985 sunk in the Med and I have a Navy News article stating her sinking took place.
Grampus is the mystery. In my view she was lost/ sunk as a target in 1980 but clearly not in the Spring as the photos prove. As mentioned Nov 1980 is a possible date.

Got a reply from the RN Submarine Museam....

Dear Sir,

As far as I know from our “Submarines Database” Grampus was lost off the Scottish coast while being used as a target.

The entry is cut and pasted below:

1976 : Paid-off and placed in Reserve.

Placed on Disposal List on 4 December 1978.

29 February - May 1980 : Removed from the Disposal List and converted in Portsmouth Dockyard for use as an ASW target.

Lost as an ASW target off Scotland shortly afterwards.

Yours sincerely,

Mr George A Malcolmson

Archivist

Further to my earlier posts regarding dates, I also have notes stating the Grampus departed for the final time on the 13th May 1980 and was subsequently lost.

Buggins, with the greatest respect, is there any chance your August photo date could be inaccurate?

odd place to lose her - upper Loch Fyne used for noise ranging. But as far as I am aware nothing lower down. Given that she had marker poles and markings on the fin perhaps she was intended as a just below surface torpedo target (without live warhead) which went wrong. I have put a question on the RMAS forum to see if any of the salvage guys has an answer.

Steve - I have no problem about my photo dates being questioned however I am pretty obsessional about recording dates of photos/sightings. Your 13 May date was presumeably when she left Portsmouth for Scotland.

Thank you for understanding Buggins.
When it comes to disposal dates to warships/RFA/RMAS vessels, having maintained notes on such things for 30 years I am keen to get the info right. At least we can put Grampus's end to bed now.

One thing I have learned over the years is that public records and RN research groups don't always have the correct info and that the photo evidence displayed here on SN can make one question all they took for granted. Thank you for displaying these wonderful images.
