John. I'd assumed the ship was in port. Assumption made due the reference to "stress relieving".

A captain working in port ? Are you kidding me?
The U.S.flag S.S. Mayaguez, a Jones act steam containership (ex American Aquarius) had a captain with a sign on the door. It said, "There is absolutely NO reason to knock on this door in port. Any inspection paperwork is in holders behind you or copies are under that glass. " Contact the Chief Mate otherwise."

The ship had a dayworking chief mate. Since the ship came in for 0800 cargo ops, the captain got up real early for the maneuver in to San Juan. The ship sailed at 2300 the same day generally; of course the captain is supposed to be rested and alert for that. So after docking the captain went out to his car and went to his apartment and stayed there all day. Ask anybody who worked for Puerto Rican Marine (Navieras de Puerto Rico)

By contract the ship's captain is responsible to get the ship from dock to dock safely - PERIOD ! He is contractually allowed to delegate any other non navigational duties to others. I heard this statement from a different Sea-Land captain at dinner. He later retired from as vice president of the Master, Mates, and Pilots Assn. In Charleston SC he was the first one down the gangway to meet other local vacationing captains and engineer friends for golf. In HOU he'd walk over to the SeaLand office and borrow a pickup truck for the day and do whatever and be back an hour before sailing...just like me.

Those 2 captains never wore shoulder boards at sea and you never even SAW them in port. Neither of them kissed any company ass .

John, your experience at sea must have been very different from mine.
After 25 years as Master the days of me disappearing ashore in port have long gone.
Sadly the quality and plain fun in the job has been squeezed out and demands on everybody raised to the point where stress is a real problem.
The good news is that my shipmates are still as fine a bunch of men as you could wish to sail with.
I've been accused of a few things in my career but kissing company ass is a first.
