This rather poor image is of the City of Bedford towing the disabled Swedish ketch, GLOBE.
The GLOBE, in which my wife to be was the mate, had suffered rudder problems at the southern end of the Red Sea, in March 1956. Four days earlier the Blue Funnel, PROMETHEUS, had taken off the owner's wife and her two small children.
I succeeded in tracking down a photographer on board the latter ship, but have so far failed to find one, whom I'm sure must have been doing the same in the City of Bedford.
The GLOBE arrived safely in Aden after a 100 mile tow. I would be delighted to discover if this rescue had been photographed. Any old City of Bedford hands still around?!

Since first posting this photograph several thousand new members have joined SN. I wonder if there is anyone of them who may have been in this ship in March 1956, or possibly knew somebody who was?

I cannot believe that amongst our 18,000 members there is not someone who knew somebody who was in the City of Bedford at the time this photograph was taken from the Swedish ketch, GLOBE. She had become disabled in the Southern end of the Red Sea in March 1956, and was being towed to Aden.

The chances may be less than you think. Possibly 24 Officers on the vessel, 51 years ago, the odds are that even the youngest of those will be 70 odd years old by now and probably more than 50% will have passed away, making the odds even longer. However, I do hope that you find success.

Still living in hopes that some old City of Bedford hand may have taken photographs: after all, it's not so very long ago (March 1956).

Hello Hugh, did you ever find any crew members from the City of Bedford?

Dear Administrator,
Sadly, nothing came of my enquiry, so there is no point in keeping my request open.
Kind regards, Hugh Ferguson.

Don't give up Hugh, just when you don't expect, something usually crops up. I was born in 63 so am innocent of all charges.
