This was an end of course photograph taken on the fore-court of Bryneithen early in 1954.
I wonder if anyone will recognise themself. I was one of the instructors in the seated front row.

Is this the course all the Blue Flue Middies used to take?

Yes, it was but not just the middies. It was set up by L.D.Holt, during the war, when it became evident that a lot of life was being lost in the process of abandoning ship and sailing life boats. As a result of this training, Blue Funnel suffered a considerably lower rate of fatality than was the norm.
The general loss of life rate was about 17%. Blue Funnel's was about 9%.
The Outward Bound concept stemmed from Laurence Holt's association with Kurt Hahn, the founder of Gordonstoun School, and is now, literally, worldwide.
He was a compassionate and caring ship-owner.
