The Wellington - Lyttelton ferry WAHINE approaches the entrance Wellington harbour after a daylight passage from Lyttelton. In the background is Pencarrow Head the headland off which the vessel would first go out of control and broach to port on the morning of 10 April 1968 heeling over on her starboard side almost on her beam ends. This image shows her in happier times.

My Dad nearly got killed up there trying to secure a building site. After that they decided to get the hell on out of there.

Were you onboard for that trip?

yes the call came to abandon ship while we were trying to secure a tug down aft,by the time i reached my boat stations it was gone,a steward terry and myself helped passengers into the water off the strb.side namely more or less throwing them into the water no more pax,and as we were under the funnel and fearing it might colapse we left,i had no life jacket so i stood and undid a smoke float that was tied to a life ring and just floated clear

I was there in Wellington 10 April 1968.
What a storm!
Whole city just a wreck.
