These ships belonging to the Swedish shipowner Mikael Kraft's Monaco based Star Clipper company are far removed from the old sailing ships, but they don't masquerade as anything traditional either. The Royal clipper did her maiden voyage in 2000, she has a hull length of 120 metres and a tonnage of 5000 grt. The square sails are rolled up inside the standing yards, all sailhandling being powered and controlled from deck. Stabilizators see to it that no champagne or pool water are spilled by such nonsense as heeling, and she can manage fine under her two caterpillars should the wind stay away or turn irritating. Does she look good? Not to my eyes, but get along fine under sail I'm sure she can. A speed of 20 knots under sail are claimed for her, that's a lot. It is generally considered that 18 is a maximum for ordinary hulled big sailing ships, but the bigger they are, the faster they go, and she's indeed big. I'm not ruling it out, but that they would press her that much in the sort of wind needed with her kind of passengers onboard I doubt very much. The price of a de-luxe suite I don't know, but had I the money I would perhaps still prefer having to do toilet-washing duty, sleep in a crowd, and furl sails aloft on Sørlandet. (I know a certain Mister Henderson who would disagree with most of that). Regards, Stein.

I have no argument with your comments Stein. Star Clipper is operated by a small niche company exploiting old time sail fantasy, without the harsh reality or ultimate satisfaction that comes from real sailing. Good luck to them.

Regards

Fred

In short, the sort of ship to give Stein nightmares and Fred wet dreams.
