A bank like something out of a John Carpenter film envelopped our yacht "Footloose" en route from Dun Laoghaoire to Arklow. Thank heaven our skipper John Friar was a canny sailor

Brings back memories of my sailing days in the North Sea, East wind means fog. Light winds, full sail and silence, listening for the bell buoy or the light ship fog horn then hearing the thump of approaching diesels and going below to listen to the thrash of the screws (you get a better indication of direction below the water, some said the sound was more resonant if you put your head in the lavatory bowl). Your futile blasts on the Norwegian fog horn go unanswered as the approaching ship does not even routinely sound the whistle but this is 1980s. What ever happened to"fog mist falling snow and heavy rain storms, shall proceed at a moderate speed having careful regard for the existing circumstances and conditions and no doubt our radar reflector is in the clutter at the centre of his PPI. Do you know "Nearer my God to Thee?
