The Jugendschiff Salomon is operated by an organisation who help up to 15 teenage boys considered “at risk”. These youths from Germany & Switzerland have normally been in trouble with the law and are required to complete 40 weeks of training on the ship as a last resort to correct their behaviour. The boys are taught how to cook, clean and maintain the vessel and really appreciate the opportunity of working hard whilst travelling and gaining valuable experience.
Whilst some may consider this a holiday, the first few weeks are very difficult for the boys who are not used to having routines and working hard. The ship has more than a 60% success rate, with many of the boys going straight after their time at sea.
