Gosh, what an attractive ship! She and her sister, CHITRAL, were purchased by P&O when practically new, for a mere 3 million pounds, after the Belgian Congo gained independence and trade with Belgium was drastically reduced. Carrying 240 passengers - all in First Class - these combination liners, known for being very good sea boats, operated a mouth-watering itinerary from London's King George V Docks to Rotterdam, Southampton (for passengers), Port Said, Aden, Colombo, Penang, Port Swettenham, Singapore, Hong Kong, Yokohama, Kobe and return. The roundtrip took ten weeks.

Yes, absolutely lovely. Too use that over-worked phrase, 'yacht-like.' Their lines were truly perfect.

Both Cathay and Chitral were regular visitors to Melbourne while they were on the Melbourne - Japan route.
