One morning, quite some years ago, I happened to be the duty pilot for the Port of Dover when the Trinity House clerk, Mark Tapley, called me into his office to take my pick from a collection of books and magazines which had been left to the pilots by an Admiral who had just died.
I chose the 4 bound volumes of the Blue Peter magazine for the years, 1928/31.
Blue Peter was an absolutely superb publication which, sadly, went by the board many years ago. That was an era when Britain was a great maritime nation which, unfortunately, it is no longer.

Spurling did an earlier version on the cover of Blue Peter, here: LINK This on the October 23 cover. I suggest he redid her portrait, partly because the first version showed her with a whaleback poop she did not have, and perhaps partly because he had done the composition above with great success for the Mermerus, also largely white hulled (if that ship-portrait came first). Truthful as regards sail-carrying the picture is not, but to my mind it's still a masterpiece. It has perhaps little relevance here: but here's the Harbinger facts: LINK
Regrettably much of the bound volumes offered for sale is without the covers, which it was customary to remove when binding magazines. One such set was recently for sale at Styrbjørn Øhmann in Gothenburg. (If any collector of maritime books should pass through Gothenburg, they should look up this antiquarian bookseller). Regards, Stein

Hugh, what luck.
More than any other magazine, I've always want to own copies of the "Blue Peter", but never have had the opportunity to find them at a reasonable price.
And they look as new.

Bruce

Thanks, Stein, for the technical details. just a few of the issues have the front cover retained and I did wonder why that should be.
Yes, Bruce, every one is in perfect condition. I guess I'll be posting quite a few more-there are a lot of excellent photographs to choose from. Hugh.
