We carried two young elephants from Bangkok to Kobe in 1958, for the zoo there, and knowing their longevity wonder if they are still amusing Japanese children to-day They would about 59 now Since Kobe was our last port on the coast we had to carry them through three or four other discharge ports and in Yokohama where we were discharging rice ( for sake distilling) they got free of their ankle chains and went after the rice straw bags the stevedores used for collecting sweepings. They were quite harmless but the stevedores did not realize it and it was hilarious to see them scatter. Now if Bill Slim had had a couple of divisions mounted on elephants maybe he could have reconquered Burma a lot faster!

Glengarry and both pictures were taken at the same time, in July 1949.

Do you know how to edit the information?
