Mara and Spey weren't your usual Bank Boats and the funnel fumes were something chronic. Believed to have been bought off the stocks at Swan Hunter. Sulzer powered too which was also unusual.

Can someone tell me if the poops on "Mara" and "Spey" were full-height or bulwark height? I cannot seem to decide from the existing photographs!

Can sympathise with your chronic funnel fumes Waighty, although I didn,t sail on the Mara I can still recall the smells and the dry throat with a following wind in mid ocean.

Alistair I'm pretty sure they were full height but the old grey matter isn't what it was.

John, you gave the exact description of the smells and dry throat. I believe on the Spey they utilised some old 50 gallon (or is it 200 litre!) drums as extra fume clearers but were told to remove them by Eng'r Supers.

On the "Ernebank" (1965) we also had funnel fumes trouble on the boat deck and swimming pool area. The Second Engineer, devised an extension of the main engine exhaust which we installed with complete success - no deck fumes! But like Waighty's story, we had to remove it. These damn supers! As Mate, I was very pleased with the exhaust extension as it kept the integrated buff mast clean for much longer. In the end, I gave up keeping the whole mast clean and painted the backside and ladder black whilst trying to keep the forward side and faring buff. On some of the sisters, they gave up all together and painted most of the mast black which I, in turn, did not approve of!
