Fantastic threebs, shows down town Auckland as I remember it, but this would be before 1976. The ship at Princes Wharf looks like Himalaya who had gone by 1976. We on Arcadia took over from her cruising from Sydney in October 1974, when Himalaya went for scrap. And the ship at Queens looks like either Monterey or Mariposa. I would say this was early 1970s, possibly when I was still there!.

Manapouri or Mataura at Queens in P & O livery so reckon 1972/3 and an H class 2nd from left.

Hi Pompeyfan, the date on image is quite specific, but they have been known to be wrong before. I still have other images of Auckland from the 1970s, I will look them out to see if any are dated earlier with the same vessels.

In those days when a run ashore was a short walk into the centre of a city, rather docking miles from the action. Great, clear, picture thanks for posting.

Thanks threebs, look forward to seeing more. But this is certainly not 1976 Himalaya was sadly razor blades by then. She was supposed to be in Auckland on 30th October 1974, but actually arrived in Sydney that day following her final cruise. I know this because we on Arcadia took over from her. I still have the brochure. We took some of her passengers because her last cruise, Cruise 439, 15 days from Sydney was supposed to include the Melbourne Cup for passengers joining her before Sydney, but we did that cruise on Arcadia leaving Sydney on 3rd November. From the same information the only other actual date I have of her in Auckland in 1974 is 25th September. Hope this helps!.

threebs. She was supposed to be there on 30th October 1974 according to the brochure I have, but that cruise must have changed missing one of the ports. She was certainly in Auckland during October because we took passengers that joined her in Auckland, and took them back arriving back in Auckland on 10th November 1974. So we may never know the actual date. Sorry to make it more confusing?!. But please keep these pictures coming, they are fantastic

Just to the right of the Air New Zealand building, is the West Plaza building still under construction.
Construction started in 1970 and was completed in 1974.

The Air New Zealand building was completed in 1973.

So could well be 1974 sometime.
