I could be wrong, but I don't think there was a "Hunt" class of ship, as all of the bulk carriers within the P&O Bulk fleet were named after English Hunts, so you had a Cotswold which was one type of ship and a Kildare which was something else, so the "hunt" did not denote a particular class of ship, it just indicated that it was one of several different types of ship within the P&O Bulk Carrier Fleet.

Buoy, according to Mr. Middlemiss's excellent Merchant Fleets No. 44, she was just called Irfon without the "hunt". Built 1971 by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, Kiel. 152,500 DWT OBO, LOA 946' 2", Breadth 142' 6", Depth 77' 6". 2 steam turbines by AEG Berlin geared to a single shaft, 16 knots service speed. May 1971 completed for Trident tankers. 1972 transferred to P&O Bulk Shipping Division. March 3rd 1980 took up duties as an oil storage vessel at Ardjuna, Indonesia. July 22nd 1985 arrived at Sha Tin, China for scrapping. Nice picture, thanks for sharing. She apparently had 2 sisters, Jedforest & Kildare.
Regards,
Alastair

I joined Irfon in Brazil in March 1975 and left her when she was laid up in Venice Lagoon in May of that year.

All the P&O bulkers (with the exception of Aurora) were originally part of a joint ownership with an American co called ABC (Associated Bulk Carriers) and because of the ABC inference they were all named alphabetically after hunts in the UK. Started with Atherstone and ended with Zetland. When P&O bought out the fleet they maintained the hunt links and continued naming the ships in that fashion. The Irfon hunt is actually a hunt in the Towy Valley, Carmarthenshire - my home town is Carmarthen. Thus there wasn't really a hunt class as such, but they were refered to in this way. I also sailed in Jedforest & Kildare & many others...!

Kildare was build at Eriksbergs Shipyard in Gothenburg. Delivered to P&O late 1972. See this link. https://www.shipsnostalgia.com/galler...what/allfields

I always thought it was frightfully convenient that they had one for "Q" - as in Quorn

Paul, - You are of course totally correct, and on this basis they must have been named after UK Hunts and my initial posting was totally inaccurate and in line for the Blue Seated Halibut Award

Just for the record before going to ardjuna Irfon was laid up in Venice for a number of years with a maintenance crew. If my memory serves me correctly Captain Roger Boyden was the permanent Chief Officer/Master then.
For info the P&O Bulk carriers Bulk carriers/OBO's/O'Os traditionally were named after British hunts. I sailed on both Eridges, Cotswolds, Duhallows, Jedforests, Ullswaters, Vines, as well as two trips on Heythrop and Grafton and also Pytchley, Lauderdale and Waterford.
