She was a passenger/cargo ship of 9,000 grt, built in 1906 as BULOW for the North German Lloyd. In 1916 she was seized by the Portuguese Government and renamed TRAS-OS-MONTES. Sold to Companhia Nacional de Navegaceo in 1925 taking also her final name. In 1931 she was used to transport troops to deal with the "Madeira Revolt".
