RMMV Capetown Castle leaving Southampton
This is a print of an oil painting by Colin Verity.
On the reverse I found a piece of paper with the following printed thereon.

Southampton 4 pm Thursday afternoon
This was the weekly departure time of Union Castle's weekly sailings from Southampton to the Cape.
This picture depicts the flagship of Union Castle's pre-war fleet, the Capetown Castle, at moment of departure. She was launched in 1937 by the mayoress of Capetown, Mrs J.D. Low from Harland and Wolff in Belfast.
With a gross tonnage of 27,005, a length of 746 feet and a beam of 84 feet she was the world's longest motor liner and arguably one of the most beautiful liners ever built. The ship was propelled by twin screws driven by two 10 cylinder Harland-Burmeister and Wain double acting diesels delivering a total of 25,000 hp. She served as a troopship during the second world war and though twice attacked, came through, unscathed to resume the Cape run until scrapped at La Spezia, Italy, late in 1967.

I had the pleasure of sailing on her as Junior Uncertificated 4th Officer (somewhat junior to the ship's cat) for two voyages, the last two before the seamen's strike in 1966.
