74Sqn Lightnings over Singapore

Maritime Art? Hope so.......just about I think with harbour shipping in background....at least it gives an unusual perspective on Singapore coastline! reminded of this one by Sergestone's latest aviation maritime posts... commission from my old 'tiger' Squadron although we had Puma helicopters when I served....better stop rambling!!.....

The Lightning, what an aircraft, made the hairs grow on the back of your neck when they flew low level through the Gap in North Yorkshire, there is a group of Americans hoping to have one flying shortly. Rather nice painting.

I understand they were the first aircraft in the world to be able to accelerate vertically upwards, as their thrust from the two engines exceeded the weight of the frames.

Thanks all...appreciated. Yes, the Lightning was an amazingly powerful jet fighter..literally a pilot strapped to two Avon engines...but it was a sod to maintain and service, drank fuel..hence the belly tank ..and fuel leaks were a major headache,
cheers

There were a few of the early versions which had to ditch in the North Sea after running out of fuel, the North Sea was known as the "Lightning Graveyard"

I know..the German Starfighter was known as the 'widowmaker' but there are probably more scrap lightnings under there !

If you were on the BAE "approved" list a few years ago you could have bought an ex Saudi Lightning for £1.000!!
