A shoal of Skippers

Any old Wellington - Picton rail ferry men will probably remember some of these faces.
From the left are : Captains - John Gordon, Laurie Collins , Charles Palmer, (first name unknown) Anderson and (first name unknown) Gullen.
Captain Palmer delivered the ARAHANGA from Scotland, the ARATIKA from France and the ARAHURA from Denmark. All were excellent ship handlers and had a long association with the rail ferry service. The photo is taken aboard the ARANUI at Wellington.

I have good memories of Charlie Palmer - When I joined the ARAMOANA as QM he was the master, coming on to the bridge he was suprised to see such a young and handsome QM. This obviously alarmed him and I was quickly asked to come into his office where he commenced to read me the riot- act warning me this would be my one and only warning and any funny business would not be tolerated - After that we got on really well !!!!
Captain Palmer seldom spoke while on the bridge other than to give orders but when he did it tended to revolve around rugby - which he loved. I remember him as an excellent ship handler. He has since "crossed the bar"

A very interesting lot of postings to a good photograph. One of them wasn't as good a ship handler as the others.

Looking at this photo and other similar ones I have seen, I often wonder why some officers prefer to wear a Company cap badge whilst others obviously prefer to wear the standard Merchant Navy one. I am sure there must be a valid reason.
