I think the fire was alleged to have started by new fluoroscent tubes which ignited a stack of cardboard fish boxes. ( These boxes are often bulk loaded at Las Palmas port and come flat packed )
The Rescue vessel in attendance is the Spanish Coast Guards " Punta Salinas " ( callsign "EABF" on Monkey Island).. built 1982 & 1,171 g.t.
She is a sistership to the Hercules and the Hercules suffered a fire in the same area of the ship ( the flat packed Cardboard box store - made up to hold the blocks of frozen fish ) with the same type of fluoroscent tubes being the cause yet again. I believe that Vessel owners have been advised to remove all currently fitted fluoroscent tubes of the type that caused these 2 incidents and replace them with another type altogether.
Sistership Athena too had a fire onboard. Both ships, Hercules (Sotrudnichestvo, bn. 500 factorias Vulcano, Vigo, Spain) and Athena (KAPITAN AZARKIN, bn. 503 factorias Vulcano, Spain) are both tied up on a pier at Asmar shipyard, Talcahuano, Chile.
