Is it me, or do these look more like two different types? Leander-ish at the left and Tribal at the right?

Just realized that my photo of H.M.S. Torquay was taken on the same day. Torquay was a Whitby Class Frigate, the design of which was later modified for the Leander and Rothesay Class,

Bob

This is early summer 1987, Torquay was towed to Spain for breaking in July whilst in late Spring approx May time, Ashanti was placed on the trots after 7 years use as a Sultan training vessel. Ashanti had her 965 removed during her time as a training vessel. The other giveaway to it being Ashanti is the VDS well.

Your welcome Bob, just one final mention with regards to the picture title, Ashanti is the Type 81 in the fore whilst the Type 12 Torquay is in the distance.

i served on both these ships, Torquay being my first sea draft. Torquay certainly served her country well, it must have been around 30 years.

vds being the forerunner to towed array which had excellant qualities but was quite short lived for such a fine piece of kit, it is said that given the right sea conditions the qe was picked up coming out of new york harbour from this side of the pond
