ABEL TASMAN

Built for the Union Steam Ship Company subsidiary, H.C.S. Coasters Pty, Ltd of Melbourne the ABEL TASMAN was the last vessel built for them in 1957 by Hall, Russell & Co, Ltd Aberdeen. Built to carry mainly timber she had two large holds and had derricks with a lifting capacity of 7.5tons. She is seen at Wellington during the early 1970s.

She is painted in the colour scheme of H.C.Sleigh, was she manned by them or USSCo?

I am not sure but sleighs were still around at the time so I assume it was Sleigh. We worked her at % Walsh Bay as a Sleigh contract and Union company had their own Stevedoring company at the time. They closed the conventional around 69 accecpt for the RoRo operations which they retained. James Patrick and sons took over the convetional
