AGROUND !

AGROUND !

On the night of 25 Aug, 1913 the Federal -Houlder-Shire Line vessel DEVON ran aground in a southerly gale and heavy rain which greatly effected visability. The DEVON run aground at the entrance to Wellington Harbour near the Pencarrow light house becoming a total loss. All the crew were taken off the stricken vessel in very difficult conditions. The ships mascot a black and white cat including her kittens were also rescued. In time and after numerous southerly storms broke up and now other than some wreckage on the seabed nothing is visable to indicate that once a proud vessel had met her end amongst the rocks.

That is a proud vessel, sad to see it like that. Good to hear about the rescue though, including the moggies!

Thanks for that Emmanuel,we certainly have had our share of shipwrecks in NZ, thankfully this one without loss of life. Thanks also for the many other excellent photos of the NZ shipping scene you have posted in the Gallery.

Best Wishes

Brian
