AL ASAD

AL ASAD

A somewhat mysterious Syrian vessel, which I at first took for a ferry as she has a stern ramp. However, her grey colouring suggests that she may have a military role, so I've opted to put her under 'Navies'. If that's correct, it may not be a coincidence that her name - which literally means 'Lion' - is the surname of Syrian President Hafid Al Asad.

The name would appear to be "Al Assad", described as a Syrian training ship capable of minelaying in time of war.
Polish-built in 1988 as a ro-ro.

Thanks for the info, Mike. So I was right in initially thinking of a ferry!
Transliteration of Arabic is of course open to variation.
