Built as Dovenby Hall by Palmers, Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1885, 2066 grt (that's big for a three master!), full rigged, double topgallants on fore and main, for Globe Shipping Co. of Liverpool (Charles Dunn & Co.), under whose flag she tramped around for seventeen years. Making a couple of unsavoury headlines. The steward once murdering the captain, who, from what emerged at the trial, deserved what he got. Then a carpenter disappeared, and there was a strong suspicion he was aided in his disappearance. In 1902 Arens of Bremen bought her and named her Sylphide, and sometime after sold her to Scramm & Co of Bremen, who named her Henriette. In 1909 she went to Bolten of Hamburg who kept her named Henriette, and in 1913 to the Vinnen brothers of the same town who also kept her name. In 1917 she was appropriated by the Brazilian government and put in trade as Mearim, (Brazil remained neutral in World War I until 1917. Following the bombarding of Brazilian commercial ships by the German army, president Venceslau Brás declared war on Germany in 1917, and captured what he could of German ships on the Brazilian coast). And finally in 1922 the ship went to Brazilian Lloyd, who changed her name to Almirante Saldanha and employed her as cadet ship for future officers of that company. She remained under their flag until hulked in 1928. (A barquentine schoolship was given the name in 1933).
There's nothing I can see in this picture that shows her to be a training ship, she looks like an ordinary trader. Regards, Stein
