I think the dutch company has 60% of the shares now too.
Aye if JPD ( John Peter Duncan ) hadn't been caught landing black ( along with 2 of the factories ) the fleet wouldn't have been having to pay back 50,000 tons of quota over the next 6 years. I think he got off lightly with the £1m fine between him and the mate. I think that was the catylist for the remaining shareholders selling out to the Dutch company.
Yes Darren almost all of them were at it at one point or another its just that JPD managed to get caught. Its only him thats ever been charged which kinda makes people think he's the only one. 20 years ago there were constant attempts by purser skippers to bribe fishery officers to turn a blind eye to black fish landings ( well they did bribe several of the temperory seasonal staff ) so its only really been cleaned up by what happened with the Altaire.
Black fish has been prevalent in the white fish industry until the last few years , I don't doubt that it still happens just not in anything like the scale it did before.
I know of dozens of examples of black fish landing by pelagic and white fish boats , but , due to the official secrets act I aint allowed to tell ya ( and these were the ones over 15 years ago too ). Whats happened has happened and its a dead cert it wont ever be allowed to happen again!!
As to which country was the worst , well there was a case against the Danish government in the mid 1980's because they conspired with the industrial industry to cover up landings of 500,000t of Herring for fish meal when the North Sea Herring was closed.
