Designated C4-S-57a and built in 1963 for the United States Lines by Bethlehem Steel in their Fore River yard at Quincy, Massachusetts.
11,185GT, 560'OA x 75', single screw, turbine, 21 knots service speed.
70 ton heavy lift gear between hatches 3 & 4.
When built, this class was the fastest cargo ship type afloat.
Her sister. the 'American Challenger', on her maiden transatlantic voyage, set a speed record for freighters. Eastbound she averaged 24.2 knots, westward 23.8.
Scrapped 1986.
