Using the above photo of Andes as an example - Was there a "flag etiquette" as to when an ensign was flown from a "gaff" where fitted or from the stern? I remember watching a BI ship, may have been cadet ship Chindwarra, leaving an anchorage at Aden. - With impressive precision as soon as the ship began to move ahead an ensign was lowered from the stern and another raised to the mainmast "gaff" - If that is the correct term.
