APOLLON

APOLLON

Mention of her at Liverpool also reminded me that she ran from the Clyde for a short time as well. This was taken in 2005 as she arrived off Greenock's Ocean Terminal with at that time Cory's tugs WARRIOR III at the stern and FLYING PHANTOM at the head.

Not 2005 Paul, the tugs are in Cory colours. Perhaps 1995?

The APOLLON was scrapped at Alang in 2003, two years before this photo is dated!

A pleasant reminder that she once sailed as a Canadian Pacific "Empress" from the Tail of the Bank.

A lot of history here in this one ship.

This was the Empress of Canada, built as a passenger liner but converted to cruise ship as the Mardi Gras. She was the first ship of Carnival Cruises, and was the beginning of what is now the biggest cruise company in the world buying up P&O and Cunard, and best past of the others.

After Mardi Gras she became Olympic, Star of Texas, Lucky Star and Appollo. She was scrapped in 2003.

She first entered operations as Empress of Cananda in 1961. David

sailed on her as Apollo with Direct cruises in late 1990's. just Liverpool to Liverpool down to the Canaries. Still had items from earlier names about the ship, lots of polished wood and brass. A seperate cinema and the most entertaining entertainers we have sailed with. Still doing engine room visits as well as bridge tours. Great trip, only blemish was a massive roll as we entered Casablanca which threw several passengers from their berths and caused a number of injuries

Great memories of this ship as MARDI GRAS--I worked at Carnival through the 1980s and spent a good chunk of my life aboard this vessel.
