Aquitania
I missed yesterdays 70th anniversary of this famous ships final departure from Southampton, her homeport for 31 years. Thanks to Chris for reminding me about it. The photograph appears to have been doctored for some reason, as the first funnel is clearly taller than the other three. I don't know

Hi Clyde,

Just checked some video of Aquitania departing on her last voyage. You Tube, 6.13 minutes. Pause at 5.48... 5.49 minutes. Yes the forward funnel appears taller. I think t is just a thicker plume of smoke coming from of the funnel top. Not 'retouched'.

Another close look at the image. Open and enlarge and study the top of the funnel of No. 1. The Black top of the funnel looks LESS darker than the black smoke coming out of it!

Hi Stephen, you're right, it looks like an optical illusion. I wonder if the thickness of the fog is causing the top of the funnel to appear less black than the smoke coming out of it?
