Thanks Frank...with you now..had a bit of a senior memory block. On a Saturday night used to do the Yorkshire Hussars, Mad House (Market Tavern), Central Market, Whitlocks, Ship Inn, Mitre, Three Legs and by this time had a fairly good head of steam to continue up the Arcade to the Mecca Locarno and pull a bird....Happy Days

Hamish...Can't ever recall the Mitre been a gay bar back in the sixties..used to be one down the Calls and a Lesbian bar near Leeds Bridge..'Hope and Anchor' and the 'Mucky Duck' seems to ring a bell..family used to live up York Rd in the late sixties, used to drink in the White Horse.. had a cousin Stella who was a barmaid in the Melbourne..Was on the Goole pool myself when ever I bothered to pay a visit up there..was Smithie running the pool when you shipped out of there.

Had a look at your pub list on arethusa.com and recognised a lot of them (tripped out of a few of their doors) knew a lot of the York Rd pubs as that is where the family lived, Eagle and White Horse were a couple of locals for me on when on leave..family moved into the flats on Ebor gardens estate Torre rd, after the roof got ripped apart on the old house down Camp Rd in a big blow back in 1962..the whole area of Camp Rd/Meanwood Rd was under demolition orders (Little London slum area)....Happy Days though...I skinned out in NZ in 1970, been here ever since.

I came to Canada in 1957, but when home and an urge to dance, I would have a few in the Wine Lodge at city square then go to the big dance hall on the west side of city square, we would shun the Mecca as in the 50's it was like being in Trinadad, York road pubs from the White house East- the Shaftsbury (Harehills lane)the Dog and Gun (on the Gibtons) then the Melbourne and if one wen't as far as Seacroft the Red Lion had a good pint

Forgot all about Yates Wine Lodge...now there was a place for a decent hangover, (from the booze that is, not a smack around the head). Used to get a great pint of Guinness in The Peel further back from the square.

Frank
