The tanker barges Arkendale H and Wastdale H on the Ridge sandbank exactly fifty years after they were wrecked. After missing the entrance to Sharpness docks in thick fog the barges collided with each other and then hit pier 17 of the Severn Railway Bridge, bringing down two spans of the bridge and

Roger really interesting series of photos you have posted. Ships Monthly did a feature on this tragedy a short while ago.

Sailed with the Arkendale skipper George Thompson in the late 70's and 80's. And sailed with him on his last trip in sept 1990.

I'd love to have met him Sandman. By the time I thought of getting in touch he had just died unfortunately.
