I guess you would just hope you don't over shoot the runwway from which ever direction you approach!!

Most definitely Wellington.
Interesting place to land on a windy day - commercial pilots need a 'Wellington' certification. This is how they see it approaching from the north www.world-airport-codes.com/photos/large/WLG_simon_gunson_wellingtonwlg_3ehbb7xhb2.jpg (Runway length is 6350ft or 1935.5m).

Thanks for that Dennis. I've just had a look on Google Earth as I was sure Auckland airport stuck into the sea, it does but this photo is most definitely of Wellington.

Worked for the Ministry of Works in 1971/72 reclaiming and extending the runway out into Lyall Bay, a real battle against the Southerlies, sometimes days of reclaiming lost over-night from a good blow.

Yesterday we were getting 60+ knots of Northerly and it was business as usual at the airport though a couple of 737 jets had to abort their landing as the pilots couldn't steady the aircraft enough to get them on the ground. They took a turn out of them and in they came again, this time landing.

I can see my place from here :)

Seriously, how old is this? The gas works is still standing and Strathmore Park is an excavated scar on the hilltops.

Thanks for posting
