AWATEA

AWATEA

Awatea

Built 1936

13,482 Tons

1942 bombed and sunk in Mediterranean while trooping.

Sad such a beautiful ship came to an awful demise.

Such is man's inhumanity to man!

A super photo of this classy little liner! A shame War claimed her along with so many others... Thanks for sharing it with us.

Absolute perfection after they heightened her funnels. My late father was not far away on HMS Shiant when Awatea was bombed and sunk off Algeria.

Yeah a great looking passenger vessel, it kinda reminds me of a little QE2 in some area's. Gordy you a quite correct in saying that it was sad the way the ship died. But there were many gains to the Allies in shipping after the war. In the end most of them ended in the scrap yard anyway, so all we have now are memories and photo's.
Thank god for technology and Shipnostalgia.

The Greyhound of the Tasman lives! A stunning shot of one of the most beautiful ships this side of the equator!

Yep, its hard to believe a magnificent looking vessel like her was bombed and sunk...I look at her lines, see her slicing through the waters and she looks invincible, its hard to imagine some huge bomb (s) dropped on her decks and blew that beautiful lady to bits.

Tragic is not the word.

Cheers and GB
