Ballylig

Not quite a Kelly boat but close!! The dredger Ballylig going out to the dump area in Dundalk Bay about 10 years ago, now a rusting hulk sunk beside Carlingford Marina as a break-water.

Evening GALTRA, she was always near a Kelly boat as she was the dredger at Magheramorne cement works (Larne Lough). Ballylig is the townland where works quarry is , she would have done 2 round trips daily, alongg with sister?? called Claymore (a local tafe off of KERRYMORE I think.) Thanks for bringing those memories back.

Hallo Anderskane, I've been down for a week with flu and my pc timeing out on SN.. I thought this might catch your eye. She gave a good bit of work here for a few years but eventually went round to Carlingford Marina owners, made the trip with wooden plugs in below- water holes in the bow.. Some years before she made a voyage to Sligo and back, but on the way to Sligo the skipper had to leave her at a small pier in Co.Donegal for a week or two. When he came back the local fishermen pointed out to him at low water that she was left-handed. Fine, but the engine was right-handed.... You'll probally understand this-- she needed more power to stop her when going into the short berth at Magheramorne Pier, so a left- hand prop. was fitted and the result was that she went out to the dredge area and back with the engine running astern and going alngside she got the full ahead on the engine to stop her!!!! But when sold everyone forgot to mention this prop... ,so she went to Sligo and back full speed astern. Charley
