Balmoral Castle brought some troops etc home from the First world War. She made two visits to Melbourne (one outbound, the other homeward bound) in 1919. She looks a bit the worse for wear for her war service in this view!! Another great Alan Green photograph.
Simply magnificent
A beautifull builders model is in the Johannesburg Library, I don,t know if is still there, I don,t live in SA so I am unable to check.
As a troopship in WW1 the Balmoral Castle conveyed B & D Companies the 4th SAI " S.A Scottish " as well as other units of the 1st and 2nd SAI, the details are in a book written by Peter Digby Regimental Historian to the Transvaal Scottish which was part of 4th SAI during WW1, the book is called Pyramids and Poppies
