She is a real beauty, I doubt they would know how to build something as lovely as that nowadays

Is it possible that this is an earlier 'Baltavia', built as the 'Manchuria' in Italy in 1901 for the Chineses Eastern Railway? Later the 'Kanto Maru', 'Western Australia' and 'Patricia' before becoming United Baltic's 'Baltavia'.

Hi Bruce,

I am pretty certain the Patricia you refer to is not the Baltavia shown in the photo. A check up on her history some time ago did not seem to tally, although I can\'t remember the exact details now.

Kind regards, John.

Hello John:
I'm not positive, either way.
There are a number of photographs floating around, including on the Simplon site, naming her as the previous 'Baltavia', but that may be an error that keeps perpetuating itself.

Hello again Bruce,

I've managed to dig out some info on the Patricia. She was bought by UBC in 1929 and was scrapped in 1935. The ship in the photo is definitely the Baltavia (ex Chimu) I served on in 1957.

Hope that clears it up.

Best wishes, John.
